Care Guide

Denim is the one fabric that improves by being left alone. Washing is what removes indigo, and indigo is what gives the fabric its character. Most pairs need airing, spot-cleaning and a cold wash a handful of times a year — not after every wear.

Washing

  • Rigid selvedge and organic cotton denim — turn inside out, cold wash at 30°C on a short cycle with a mild liquid detergent, on its own or with like colours. No fabric conditioner: it coats the cotton and dulls the surface.
  • Comfort stretch denim — same, but never above 30°C. Heat is what kills elastane; once the recovery has gone the knees and seat stay baggy permanently.
  • Chambray shirts — machine wash at 30°C, wash more often than jeans since they sit against skin. Iron damp on the reverse.

First wash and indigo transfer

Deep indigo and rinse washes crock, which means loose surface dye rubs off onto pale leather, light upholstery and white trainers for the first few wears. It is normal for raw and dark denim, and it settles. If that matters to you, wash the garment once cold before wearing it — you will lose a little depth of colour in exchange.

Drying

Line dry away from direct sunlight, which bleaches unevenly. Do not tumble dry: heat shrinks cotton, twists seams and destroys elastane recovery. Hang jeans by the waistband rather than folding them over a line, and reshape the waistband and pocket bags while damp.

Fades, whiskering and creases

Wear marks at the thigh, behind the knee and at the hem are the fabric recording how you move. They are not defects and they are not reproducible — two people wearing the same pair for six months end up with different jeans. Washing less makes the contrast sharper; washing often makes it softer and more even.

Hardware

Buttons and rivets are copper-finished steel and will patina. Do not press an iron directly onto them, and open the fly and button before washing so the waistband does not distort around them.

Repairs and reinforcement

Catch wear at the crotch and inside thigh early — a thinning patch reinforced from behind lasts years, whereas a hole in a worn area is a much harder repair. Any competent alteration tailor can do it. Do not use iron-on patches on stretch denim; the adhesive sets hard and the panel stops moving with the rest of the garment.

Storing

Hang or fold, either is fine — denim does not lose shape on a hanger the way knitwear does. Store dry and clean. Denim left damp will mildew and the marks do not come out.
