All sizes are UK sizes. Denim behaves differently depending on whether it has elastane in it: rigid denim gives about a centimetre at the waist after a few wears and stays there, while comfort stretch relaxes as you wear it and recovers in the wash. If you are between sizes in rigid denim, take the larger one.
Jeans, skirts, dresses and dungarees
Measure your natural waist and the fullest part of your hip. If a pair you own already fits, lay it flat and compare the waistband measurement doubled against the table below — that is more reliable than measuring yourself.

Inside leg
Jeans are cut to a 32 inch (81 cm) inside leg as standard and are made to be shortened. Measure from your crotch to the floor without shoes.

Jackets and shirts
Measure across the chest with the garment flat and double it. Denim outerwear is cut to layer, so the garment measurement runs well above the body measurement — that ease is deliberate.

Shrinkage
Rigid selvedge denim is sanforised before we cut it, so it loses under 1% in a cold wash — roughly half a centimetre in the leg. We have already allowed for that in the pattern. Wash rigid denim hot and it will shrink further, and that we cannot allow for.
